Matthew Atkinson - Associate

Matthew Atkinson graduated with an LLB from the University of Otago in 1994. He began his career with a law firm on Auckland's North Shore. However, Matt couldn't resist the lure of the insurance industry. In 1996 he joined the professional indemnity claims team at FAI General Insurance and later took a role as a liability underwriter for General & Cologne Re.

In 2001 Matt's career took him to the UK, where he worked with St Paul Travelers' Insurance Company in London handling professional indemnity claims against solicitors. After five cold years in Blighty, Matt returned home and returned to private practice by joining us at Jones Fee. Matt is now an associate of the firm.

Matt's work  as a  solicitor, insurance claims handler and underwriter means that he has a unique understanding of the insurance industry and the demands placed upon it.  Matt uses his experience to provide clear, direct advice and is always mindful of the ultimate strategy of achieving the best outcome for his clients in the most cost-effective manner.

Matt's many years working in both insurance and law have given him the skills and experience to handle complex and demanding cases. Utilising his extensive experience, Matt is one of our insurance litigation specialists, with a particular focus on professional negligence claims against professionals, such as:

In addition, Matt specialises in handling the defence of public liability and statutory liability claims.
